Initiated in 1985, the Gertrude Contemporary Studio Residency Program is dedicated to supporting the practices of visiting artists and curators. Originally known as the Studio 18 program, the residency was previously housed in the self-contained studio apartment at the gallery’s original Fitzroy premises. The Gertrude Contemporary Studio Residency Program is now organised in conjunction with the Norma Redpath Studio which is facilitated by the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.

Named after the prominent Australian sculptor, the Norma Redpath Studio has been made possible through the generosity of the artist’s family who bequeathed the bluestone Carlton cottage to the University of Melbourne following her passing in 2013. The Norma Redpath Studio offers international artists and curators the opportunity to develop and pursue their practices with close engagement to Melbourne’s art community and realise their projects at Gertrude Contemporary’s new home in Preston South.

This partnership with the VCA strengthens the pedagogical opportunities of the residency program. Not only will visiting artists and curators have direct access to Gertrude Contemporary and the VCA’s extensive network of artists, academics, and resources, but VCA students and the wider Melbourne community will similarly benefit from a series of additional lectures, tutorials, and masterclasses facilitated through the program.

Residencies with Gertrude Contemporary at the Norma Redpath Studio are by invitation only.
