PART-TIME SUITE (SOUTH KOREA)

Established in 2009, Seoul based Part-time Suite is a collaboration between Miyeon Lee, Byungjae Lee and Jaeyoung Park. Operating as a collective their works are based on critical discussions between the members on their shared social and economic conditions. Constantly questioning its internal relationships, the collective looks to materialize the spirit of independence and self-determination in Korea, a society full of contradiction and deficiency, and to identify means of adaptation and rebellion. By temporarily occupying urban spaces with site-specific projects their work questions the survival of art and people in cities. In 2009 Part-time suite installed their projects Under Interior and off-off-stage in a basement and an unoccupied lot in the centre of Seoul, while their project Loop the Loop was developed on rooftops in Seoul as part of the exhibition Perspective Strikes Back at Doosan Gallery, which later travelled to L’appartment 22 in Rabat, Morocco. In 2010 the group formed Part-time Suite Sound, a four-piece rock band, and Part-time Suite Press, an independent publisher. In 2011 they were nominated for the Hermés Korea Foundation Art Prize. Part-time Suite’s residency at Gertrude Contemporary was in conjunction with City Within the City, as part of a collaborative project between Gertrude Contemporary and Art Sonje Seoul, supported by Melbourne Festival.
