JOOYOUNG LEE (SOUTH KOREA)

Jooyoung Lee was Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces’ UNESCO/Aschberg Bursary laureate in 2007; a residency developed in partnership with UNESCO’s International Fund for the promotion of Culture and the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria — Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Lives and works in Seoul. Joo young makes videos and photo collages, where references from fashion and mass media are sampled to constitute new narratives and visual worlds. She also works directly in the public environment, such as through interventionist performances, magazine spreads and conceptual fashion brands.

Much of her art interacts with the public sphere directly, questioning the division of private and public, often by inviting collaboration. Lee explores both the notions and challenges of communication and translation through text, speech, and sound in both the gallery space and via public interventions. Her work has been exhibited at various venues including the Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), the Changdong Studio of the National Museum of Art (Seoul).
