Thomas Deverall's Rise and Fall revisited the Roman Circus as a template for our enduring preoccupation with collective ritual acts of spectatorship. In this exhibition, the Colosseum, the prototypical sports arena, was encountered as a fabricated model. This empty theatre, devoid of performers and audience, became the object of aesthetic attention. Intricately constructed from cardboard, Rise and Fall engaged contemporary and historical representation of public arena in order to elaborate upon the contemporary fascination with the rituals of competition, performance and public spectacle.
