Gertrude is pleased to present a new exhibition collaboratively produced by Sydney-based artists Todd McMillan and Sarah Mosca. Through an ongoing and evolving dialogue that collapses distinctions between life and work, Late Summer presents works that have been researched and produced individually by the artists, yet in close proximity to and in cognisance of one another. With an evocative nod to the passing of time and shifting of seasons, the exhibition’s title reflects a romanticism associated with this point of transition: the hotter, more hopeful months behind us and an impending descent into a period of reduced optimism.
Both artists’ practices take cue from, and in a manner, reflect their surrounding environment and the connotation of the time shared within it, the horizons availed from it, and the darkness that eventually descends upon it. Steeped in the history of Romanticism within art and literature, McMillan and Mosca’s work reanimates this legacy so that it speaks to our time, to this environment, and a subjective interpretation of the world. Within their respective oeuvres, a particular beauty and melancholy co-exist.
In the work of Mosca, the historical materiality of photography is foregrounded to consider questions of authenticity, formlessness and aesthetics, and importantly, how the image might embody narratives beyond the possibility of their representation within this format. In McMillan’s work the idea of recording place and time are investigated through depictions of environs such as the sky and sea, while also alluding to the emotive resonances of Romanticism, including the related perseverance of melancholy.
Todd McMillan and Sarah Mosca’s project has been generously supported through a residency at the Norma Redpath Studio. The Gertrude Contemporary Studio Residency Program is organised in conjunction with the Norma Redpath Studio, which is facilitated by the Centre of Visual Art (CoVA), The University of Melbourne.
