Having transformed two black plastic Ikea chairs into a complex and fascinating sculptural arrangement, Stranded continued Mira Gojak’s intriguing fusion of contemporary surrealist strategies with raw and industrial materials. Within the exhibition, each chair had been cut into 23 cross sections and placed next to each other to create a concertina- or web-like effect. As Gojak has explained, “when I was making this work I felt that I was making space, rather than a mass or form: creating space to move into, and allowing space to be let in. The two chairs, once distinct forms, are now so close they merge. They have expanded into each other.” 

Stranded presented as a striking and beguiling work, having evoked an entropic urge where form becomes formless and the viewer becomes ensnared in a strange, in-between space. Mira Gojak completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1992, and has held numerous solo exhibitions, including Stranded, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Canberra 2004; Wax me to the vapour and the dusk, sometimes, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne 2002; and Sorrow is no friend of mine, First Floor, Melbourne 2002. Group exhibitions include Southern, Home Gallery, Prague 2004; Why do Birds Suddenly Appear, Boutwell Draper Gallery, Sydney 2002, and New Drawings, Mass Gallery, Melbourne 2002.
