SNAKE

Snake presented as a series of large-scale paintings depicting the hunt for a giant anaconda. Ross’ paintings, directly inspired by photographic reportage in an old Time/Life book about South America, contained extraordinary levels of detail and pattern, creating a visual snare that parallelled the simultaneously seductive and dangerous imagery of the anaconda hunt. Snake drew on our curiosity, fascination, fears and repulsion in relation to these giant beasts and explored the eternal struggle between human beings and the natural world. After seven years living and working in France and numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States, Snake is Sally Ross’ first solo exhibition in Melbourne in eight years. Sally Ross has recently held solo exhibitions at Kaliman Gallery, Sydney 2004; Karyn Lovegrove Gallery, Los Angeles, USA 2003; and Tache-Levy Gallery, Brussels 2003. Recent group exhibitions include Portraiture, Karyn Lovegrove Gallery, Los Angeles, USA 2003 and Chambre de Sejour avec Vue, Saignon en Luberon, France 2002; and Travels in Time, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne 2001. Sally Ross is represented by Kaliman Gallery, Sydney.
