Richard Holt's exhibition Reading brought together two distinct but complementary elements - the languages of written and graphic communication. On one side of the gallery, variations of a single abstract motif were repeated through a series of wall projections and paintings suspended from the ceiling. On the opposite wall a six-page fictional narrative was scaled to engage proportionally with the walls of the gallery and paintings in the room. The relationship of the text to the image was neither illustrative nor descriptive, but rather offerered the possibility of a third element, a conceptual space which linked and examined the linear activity of reading with the perception of an artwork. The linear narrative of the text, counterpoised with the iconic and immersive fields of painting and projection, suggested the possibility of different forms of reading, experiencing and encountering the work of art, whilst also calling upon different competences in the viewer.
