ELIZA HUTCHISON: MY BRAIN STOOD ON THE BURNING DECK

Main gallery

Catalogue texts by Justin Clemens and Eliza Hutchison

Eliza Hutchison’s exhibition My Brain Stood on the Burning Deck drew upon theatrical traditions of vaudeville, employing exaggerated gestures, lighting and special effects to stage the transformation of the avant-garde artistic performer into that of a vaudevillian subject. Informed by graphic design, film stills, fashion photography and ‘ectoplasmic extension’, Hutchison’s exhibition encompassed a suite of hand-stencilled unique edition prints, video and a monumental manifesto in vinyl lettering concerning art and the deep ‘parapsychology of creativity’.
