It was with great pleasure that Gertrude Contemporary presented Gertrude Studios 2017: a group exhibition featuring new works and projects by all of our 2017 Gertrude Studio Artists.

Initiated in 1988, the annual Gertrude Studios exhibitions present a selective snapshot of contemporary art practice and research currently being generated in Melbourne.

Providing an overview into the work being produced in and via our Studio Program, the exhibition was neither thematic nor an exploration of a particular idea, but rather, presented singular works and discrete projects from a range of artists, to emphasise the diversity of practices supported within the Studio Program. Beyond the solo presentations Gertrude’s Studio Artists presented at our satellite site Gertrude Glasshouse this year, this exhibition rendered public the creative thinking and production generated in the sixteen studios that surround our High Street gallery.

Gertrude Contemporary is constantly evolving as an organisation and the Gertrude Studios exhibitions have been a chronicle of artistic practice in Melbourne for 28 years, eagerly anticipated by our audiences.

Gertrude Studios 2017 encompassed a broad range of media including: sculpture, film, photography, painting and site-responsive installations.

An exhibition catalogue, generously designed by Yanni Florence, was available online after the exhibition’s opening.
