STUDIO 12 | LOUISA BUFARDECI: COUNTER-PLAY

Studio 12 Exhibition

Counter-play continued Louisa Bufardeci's recent series of installations, which consider the role that demography and data profiling play in tracing the status of individuals and populations. Bufardeci covered walls of Studio 12 with statistics and case studies drawn from the ‘Human Rights And Equal Opportunity Commission's Report Of The National Inquiry Into The Separation Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Children From Their Families'. At the centre of the darkened gallery, a water fountain could be heard, dripping like a metronome. The repetitious sounds, disturbing text and claustrophobic atmosphere aimed to evoke in the audience a sense of anxiety commensurate with that induced by incarceration and racial oppression.
