STUDIO 12 | CHACO KATO

Studio 12 Exhibition

In this exhibition, Japanese artist Chaco Kato continued her exploration of imperfect beauty through her hand-crafted objects and found materials. Kato covered the gallery floor with a sea of coloured jelly moulds filled with compost and soil. Complementing these naturally decaying and symbolic materials were delicate, almost invisible, painted wire chains linked from a continuously evolving structure. The deterioration of the jelly over the course of the floor, and the fluid, generative structure of the wire curtain evoked a sense of spiritual regeneration and the ever-changing cycles of life - important themes for the artist and an outcome of Kato's study of Eastern philosophy.
