JAN MURRAY

Jan Murray's Torn series of site-specific installations develops her concern with the internal and contextual architecture of 'painting'. Through the deployment of trompe l'oeil paintings that appear to have been deliberately vandalised, Torn explores the space between the surface of the canvas and the wall and tests the literal and metaphysical limits of painting as object and illusionistic vehicle.

This project builds on previous work in which the paradoxes of perception and representation inherent in both looking and painting were acutely focussed in an examination of the complex relationship between creative and destructive action.

Since 1982 Jan Murray has exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions in public museums, commercial galleries and artist run initiatives. Her work has been shown in surveys of contemporary art in Australia, Germany, France, Italy and the USA and is included in the collections of major Australian and international public institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

She is currently Head of the School of Art, Victorian College of the Arts and is represented by Charles Nodrum Gallery, Melbourne.
