WIZARD OF THUNDERDOME

2005

LISA YOUNG

This publication is the catalogue of Liza Young's exhibition at Gertrude Contemporary in 2005.

Lisa Young’s Wizard of the Thunderdome dramatically transformed 200 Gertrude Street’s Front Gallery into a giant pinball game. Having divided the gallery into several “zones” or “cities”, Young presented The Black CityThe Pure City and The White Virus, intricately constructed regions which proved analagous to our own sense of civilization, with layered references to gaming culture, advertising, architecture and modernism. Wizard of the Thurnderdome saw an expansion of Young’s work - previously manifesting as maquettes or architecturally-styled models - envelop the entire gallery space, creating a compelling alternate world in which the viewer was both player and participant.

Lisa Young completed a Master of Arts (Fine Art) at RMIT in 2004. Selected solo exhibitions include Space Invaders, RMIT Faculty Gallery, Melbourne 2003; Habitec, Smyrnious Gallery, Melbourne 2002, and Norwegian Wood, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.
