REASON & RHYME

ST PAUL St Gallery, Auckland 30 September - 28 October 2011

Bringing together ten leading contemporary artists from Australia and New Zealand, Reason and Rhyme investigated the urge to structure and channel creative production through systems, grids and frameworks.The artists in Reason and Rhyme were connected through their use of manifestos, seriality, diagrams and systems, with the exhibition exploring the points where creativity tangles with these parameters,coursing along the edges of grids,and submitting to the regimens of form and the statutes of regulated patterns.The exhibition explored the urge to locate oneself within the map or the doctrine, and to impose rules and structures across creative practice. Through applying ‘objective’ systems over creative processes each of the artists distinguished, articulated or uncovered their content. 

The exhibition at ST PAUL St Gallery was the second in a two part collaborative exchange project with Gertrude Contemporary.  The exhibition at ST PAUL St was shaped by the roundtable discussions that accompanied the first iteration of the exhibition in Melbourne, extending upon the first exhibition with the inclusion of a collaborative work by Starlie Geikie and Architect Helen Walter, and a new on-site work by Richard Frater and artist and curator Roman Mitch.

A forum was held at ST PAUL St gallery on Friday 30 September 2011 including the participating artists and invited members of AUT academic staff as well as Auckland based curators, designers and writers.
