Gertrude Contemporary’s project room at the 2012 Melbourne Art fair showcased a newly commissioned installation by Gertrude Contemporary Studio artist Paul Yore. Since 2002 Melbourne Art Fair have sponsored Gertrude Contemporary' Project Room at the biennial art fair. Each year Gertrude Contemporary curates a new commissioned project in one of the Melbourne Art Fair project spaces.

Paul Yore’s multifaceted practice includes sculpture, collage, installation, painting, tapestry, drawing and sound. For Yore’s specifically commissioned artwork for the Melbourne Art Fair, he produced a large-scale sculptural installation comprised of a circular train track positioned on a colour-wheel floor painting connecting elements of a multifarious landscape. Contemporary themes of power, violence and desire play out through the work’s references to religion and popular culture, alongside often amusingly inventive phallocentric imagery. The installation sits alongside a set of tapestries in which Yore’s ongoing interest in gender is articulated. The tapestries pit celebratory homoeroticism against a sense of frustrated masculinity, a conflict that is further complicated by Yore’s use of traditional feminine craft.

Melbourne artist Paul Yore studied painting at Monash University and has exhibited in several solo and group shows in public galleries and artist run spaces including Heide Museum of Modern Art, Federation Square, Gertrude Contemporary, Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Blindside Artist Run Space, Incinerator Arts Complex, Seventh Gallery, Westspace, Kings ARI and Trocadero Art Space.
