GERTRUDE STUDIOS 2003

Front and main galleries

Gertrude Studios 2003 encompassed an exhibition and publication which presented the work of artists who held studios at Gertrude Contemporary over the preceding year. Among the most promising artists of their generation, these artists had already begun to make important contributions to Melbourne’s visual arts culture.¨The Gertrude studio artists, of diverse ages and professional experience, had worked across a variety of media and a range of conceptual territory, creating art at the threshold of innovation and experimentation. The annual exhibition presents a unique opportunity to view the work of these artists as a group, ranging across sculpture, installation, photography, video, new media and beyond.¨2003 had been a notable year for the contribution of Gertrude studio artists to a range of significant exhibitions and projects in Australia and internationally. Artists had been involved in exhibition projects in Berlin, collaborated with choreographers for a Melbourne International Arts Festival performance, the design of a rally car in collaboration with architectural firm Ashton Raggatt McDougall, and many more activities locally, nationally and internationally.
