CITY WITHIN THE CITY

ARTSONJE CENTRE, SEOUL EXHIBITION DATES: 11 NOVEMBER 2011 - 15 JANUARY 2012

What possibilities for creativity, transgression and resistance exist for citizens in our cities? City Within the City acknowledges urban areas as a way of life for a large portion of the world’s population today. Approaching cities not as mere statistical entities, this exhibition examines the issues and stories that arise from the perspectives of inhabitants over time.

City Within the City seeks to uncover and interweave fictional, composite, fabricated and re-purposed narratives. Reflections on architecture, landscape urbanism and even environmental art taken from sources as diverse as literature, cinema, or political and social theory underpin works by the seventeen Australian, South Korean and international artists and collectives. The works featured in the City Within the City explore parallel and tangential ways to address points of friction, misalignments, and moments open for revisiting existing circumstances.

City Within the City is co-curated by Gertrude Contemporary and Artsonje Centre, Seoul, South Korea. A first iteration of this exhibition was presented at Artsonje Centre (11 November 2011 –15 January 2012) as a flagship cultural project for the diplomatic Year of Australia – South Korea Friendship. This second iteration of the exhibition is a site-specific reimagining of the City Within the City curated for the Melbourne International Arts Festival 2012.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of ARKO funding to support collaborative group Part-time Suite's 4 week residency in Australia to make new work for the exhibition.

This exhibition has also been made possible with the support of Cake industries.
