Mira Gojak creates uncanny yet spectacular sculpture, formed out of the prosaic, the home-made and the imprecise. In this major work conceived for the Front Gallery space, Gojak employed twisted and truncated plastic garden furniture to construct a surreal formation which stretched across the gallery in a graceful arc. With its elegant arabesques of plastic towering over the viewer, the form was reminiscent of an Arco lamp or some strange, exotic, monumental flora. Table legs dipped in layers of pink wax reflected back at the viewer from a floor-bound mirror, proliferating like a cluster of corporeal appendages. Gojak’s work ‘…requisitions the familiar, the note of recognition, as a vehicle for transformation: switching the height of the ordinary, setting it afloat, pushing it to the point of mutation’ (Nicole Tomlinson). In her hands, generic chair backs and table legs find new life as a narcissistic structure at once sexy, surreal and dangerous, a model for a new libidinous public sculpture.
