STUDIO 12 | NICK MANGAN: TWINCANNONVACULARIMPLOSION (STILL LIFE)

Studio 12 Exhibition

In twincannonvacularimplosion Nick Mangan endeavored to make the invisible visible. At first glance, this sculptural work looked like a perfect replica of a sound speaker, unplugged but ready to boom. A closer look revealed internal speakers resembling mountainous islands, the peaks and valleys evoking a soundscape in three dimensions. Composed after a sound sample was put through computer modeling software, sound becomes rendered in visual form. Incapable of actually reproducing sound, the speakers stood as physical manifestations of a fleeting event — an intangible, immaterial moment captured and translated from the aural to the visual. Playing on the tension between the mass-produced and the hand-made, and continuing the artist’s interest in the language of industrial and product design, Mangan relocated familiar, appropriated forms in a subtle game of simulation and contextual shift.
