Amal Saade is a Lebanese artist who was visiting artist in residence in Studio 18 at 200 Gertrude Street from January through to March in 1999 under the UNESCO/Aschberg Bursary for Artists Program. Drawing on her personal experience of Israeli-Lebanese conflict, her exhibition in the front gallery incorporated a bed made from earth, embroidered sheets and clothing hand-made by the artist’s grandmother. These elements were installed so as to replicate a room from her family home in Beirut from which Saade’s family were forced to flee during the Israeli occupation of Beirut in 1982. Her evocative work raises questions about the nature of ethnic identity as it is connected to place and patterns of everyday life.
