SUPERHERO ARTSTAAR: BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL

A highly performative exhibition involving British artists Hayley Newman and Angus Wyatt, Jennifer Moon from LA, and Starlie Geikie and Nat and Ali from Melbourne, Superhero Artstaaar: Beyond Good And Evil comprised a melting point of identities in-formation and performance, with the audience invited to join in. Whether regaled by Nat and Ali’s (scarily real) ventriloquist dolls, or joining in to sing along with Jennifer Moon's karaoke manifestos designed to change the world, Superheros Artstaar revisited the question ‘what do we want or expect from artists?’ and ‘What do we expect from art?’ Whilst some answered this question by parodying, referencing or interrogating stereotypical models —art-star, popstar, narcissist, deviant, recluse — others interrogated the canon with historiographic insight and humour, such as Hayley Newman in her celebrated series of photographs which analysed the status of performance art as it is documented through photography. Flying in the face of the death of the author, Superhero Artstaaar: Beyond Good and Evil invested in the redemptive power of art and artists to change and rule the world…
