SOFT PANIC

Curator: Mikala Dwyer

Soft Panic was the first occasional 'artists as curator' series of exhibitions with the aim to facilitate the professional development of emerging artists as well as bring the unique insights and experiences of established artists in 200 Gertrude Streets exhibition program. Mikala Dwyer was visiting artist-in-residence in Studio 18 in 1991, and has since developed a noteworthy career as one of Australia's most exciting contemporary artists. In her selection of six artists for Soft Panic, Dwyer adopted ambience as a curatorial strategy, favouring sculptural poetics over defined thematic frameworks and choosing work that ranged through painting sculpture, video and installation. Soft Panic also involved a number of emerging artists from Sydney, alongside the work of Melbourne artist David Jolly, thereby encouraging longer term interaction and dialogue.
