Catalogue text by Lara Travis in conversation with David Jolly
Presented as part of the Woolmark Melbourne Fashion Festival
Inspired by the genres of the road movie and real-life travel snapshots, Davis Jolly's suite of paintings constituted a contemporary archive of travel, leisure and personal misadventure. Rendered in oil and enamel on the reverse side of glass, Jolly's paintings establish a compelling encounter between the illusionistic and luminous depth of painterly space and the cropped, abstracted representations, and mirror-like surfaces, of screen culture. Trapped behind glass, Jolly's paintings also hint at photography's tendency to embalm memory and involve the viewer in the material process of painting through a reverse archaeology of painterly construction.
