Studio 12 Exhibition

The paintings featured in Zhong Chen’s Shaolin Spin Kick Combo, brought together motifs derived from traditional Chinese folk and popular art traditions, along with imagery drawn from computer games and cinema. The spatial properties of Zhong Chen’s exquisitely rendered paintings proved equally complex, with the deep space of western perspective collapsed into the shallow space of digital screen based renderings and eastern printmaking traditions. Taking cues from Hong Kong TV that he watched as a child, Zhong’s exhibition articulated hybrid cultural identities, melding traditional imagery with digital technology, whilst also questioning the pervasive use of violent imagery in video games.
