STUDIO 12 | SCOTT MILES: LIGHT FALLS THROUGH

Studio 12

Light falls through

Exhibition Dates: 12 October 2 November 2013
Opening: Saturday 12 October 2013, 2 – 4pm

Gertrude Contemporary was pleased to announce the opening of Scott Miles’ exhibition Light falls through in the Studio 12 Project Space.

In this exhibition of new work, Miles presented painting and installation accompanied by sound.  Light falls through responded to Miles’ recent time in the Northern Hemisphere winter of Greenland, high above the Arctic Circle.

The often spectacular and picturesque environment was visually obscured, mostly invisible, or inaccessible due to seasonal conditions. His endeavour to inhabit this place in the absence of sunlight was undertaken with considerations of painterly representation in mind. In such extremes, perception is altered and re-shaped and experiences take on the sensation of being brought to the foreground.

Scott Miles was a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist who studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and has exhibited throughout Australia since 2006. Scott’s practice considers the construction and circulation of images in relation to the practice of painting. The imagery he uses tends to reflect a panoramic view of beliefs and circumstances that often strike up disagreement, contradiction or uncertainty.  Recent solo exhibitions include The problem of a colour wheel Fehily Contemporary, Melbourne, Re-inventing a colour wheel Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Brisbane, and Reasonable Doubt at TCB. In 2012 he was awarded grants from Arts Victoria and The Australia Council for the Arts to undertake residencies in Greenland and Iceland.
