ROB MCHAFFIE, LANE CORMICK

STRESS LESS

Studio 12 Exhibition

In 2006, Gertrude studio artist Rob McHaffie and former studio artist Lane Cormick presented their first collaborative exhibition, in the experimental space of Gertrude Contemporary's Studio 12. The two artists had taken a break from their respective solo practices in order to encourage something spontaneous and organic, irrespective of medium and form. Rob and Lane first met through sharing studios in the same building in Flinders Lane. Both artists studied at Brighton Bay Art and Design School and the VCA drawing department, and both attended residencies at Gertrude Contemporary - all at different times. They grew up on opposite sides of the river, a few years apart, but have followed a path that overlaps at many points. McHaffie has said of the collaboration, “It will probably flop at times, but it will pick itself up and keep moving in whatever direction it feels necessary.”
