STUDIO 12 | ANTHONY HUNT: POLYGON

Studio 12 Exhibition

Over the last few years, Anthony Hunt’s practice has addressed questions related to minimalism and site specific installation. Polygon continues this process of conceptual and material exploration. In collaboration with a mathematician, Hunt designed a large self-supporting archway for installation in Studio 12.

Realized soon after retuning from a trip to Venice, where the artist was able to experience examples of Renaissance architecture first hand, Polygon is reminiscent of the cupolas of Renaissance palaces and public buildings, the flash of an antique camera and heroic minimal sculpture.

The work has many possible conceptual permutations, either as the application of pure maths to actual structures, or as a reflection on masculine identity as it is expressed through the heroic scale of architecture or minimalist sculpture, and related ideas of technical mastery, mathematical knowledge and practice skill.
