STUDIO 12 | CHRIS BOND: ORIGINAL TITLE: TRANSLATED

Studio 12

Classic book cover designs of the 1950s and 60s were transformed into abstract ‘skins’ in the paintings of Original Title: Translated. For this exhibition, the painting process stripped the covers of title, author, blurb and imagery, before the remains were further subjected to fragmentation, dislocation, wear and tear. The exhibited works resembled prematurely aged Colour Field paintings, their surfaces crumbled and stained. Allusions to the decay of twentieth century aesthetic utopias were present in the works, the fall of Modernism charted with sentiment and bite.
