ADAM GECZY: INVOCATION AND EXORCISM (FROM THE SERIES 'THE TERROR OF ART')

Main gallery

Catalogue text by Adam Geczy

The self destructive potential of male sexuality is the ostensible subject of Adam Geczy’s ‘Terror of Art’ series of photographic works in which the artist places his own unclothed body in the place of Adolf Hitler’s. Based upon images reconstructed from preparatory photographs used by Hitler for the Nuremburg rallies, Geczy’s project is presented as exaggeratedly emotive, operatic, Wagnerian, and the repertoire of male identity limited. The work relates personal experience to cultural memory, addressing questions of inherited accountability and conscience.
