NEO NOIR

Curated by Mark Feary
Presented as part of the 2002 Next Wave Festival

Curated by Mark Feary and presented as part of the Next Wave Festival, Neo Noir explored dark, dramatic, morally ambiguous and cinematic tendencies within contemporary art practice. In presenting the work of Sharon Goodwin, Matthew Griffin, Camilla Hannan, Kate Just, Sarah Lynch, Amanda Marburg and Van Sowerwine, Neo Noir sought to play up the increasing dialogue and convergence between screen, pop and visual art contexts. Involving the choreography of painting, video, installation and sound, the exhibition established a web of crime narratives, gangster mythologies, forensic encounters and alternative realities that summoned the history of cinematic film noir as much as the gritty realities of contemporary urban experience.
