Exploring the culturally-contentious and emotionally-loaded realm of the mother/baby relationship, Karyn Lindner’s exhibition Mothers and Babies, in Gertrude Contemporary’s front gallery, was a wall-sized installation consisting of a large number of unsettling and uncanny watercolour portraits. Hung in a grid in the gallery space, the installation was both imposing in scale and intimately engaging in subject matter. Investigating repressed, unconscious emotional structures, and their manifestations within mother-child relationships, the assembled installation explored aspects of otherness in relation to portraiture, and pictorial representations of mothers and babies.

Karyn Lindner is a Melbourne-based artist who completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1999. Lindner has held numerous exhibitions: solo exhibitions include Family Matters, TCB Art Inc., Melbourne 1999 and Illusion and Vulnerability, Transfield Obayashi CityLink Site, Melbourne 1996, and group exhibitions include Wyndham City Contemporary Art Prize, Wyndham Cultural Centre, Melbourne 2002, A4 Art, Westspace, Melbourne 2001 and Five: Visual Art Alumni Award Exhibition, Span Galleries, Melbourne 2001. Lindner received the Wyndham City Contemporary Art Prize, 2002 and the Visual Art Alumni Award, Victoria University 2001. Her work is represented in private and public collections in Australia and New Zealand.
