STUDIO 12 | ANDREW MCQUALTER: LUCY IS SENDING HER ENERGY INTO THE FARTHEST CORNERS OF THE UNIVERSE

Studio 12 Exhibition

Taking the form of wall-paintings, photographs, instructional models, sculpture, drawings, diagrams, and works on paper, Andrew McQualter’s previous work has examined the actions and interactions of artists in the pursuit of making art. In posing the question ‘what do we do when we do art?’, McQualter makes visual responses that incorporate philosophical speculation and documentary evidence, matched with humour and sentiment. For his studio 12 exhibition, McQualter presented a wall-painting of friend and colleague, visiting English artist-in-residence Lucy Pedlar, ‘sending her energy into the farthest corners of the universe’. Accompanied by gouache studies of colleagues undertaking studio-performance rituals, the works alluded to a metaphysical dimension lurking behind the mundanity of studio life.
