PAUL KNIGHT

LIKE A LEAF CLINGS TO A TREE, OH MY DARLING CLING TO ME...

Studio 12 Exhibition

Paul Knight’s exhibition, like a leaf clings to a tree, oh my darling cling to me..., marked a new development in Knight’s practice towards a simultaneously representational and abstract mode of photography which has since provided both arresting visual images and evocative food for thought. For this exhibition, a number of photographs, of substances which remain separate when they are mixed, created a series of purely textural, abstract images which evoked a strong sensation of physicality. Combined with a portrait which suggested their connection to a psychological state, the body of work continued Knight’s interest in the potential of photography to represent aspects of human psychology and emotional life, beyond the traditional media of photographic portrait and documentation.

Paul Knight completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in photography at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. He has held individual exhibitions at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne 2004; Studio 12, Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne 2003; and Penthouse and Pavement, Melbourne 2002. Paul’s group exhibitions include Specimen: Contemporary Botanic Art, Domain House, Melbourne 2004; Refresh: Five Years of Photo Technica, Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney 2003; I heard it on the grapevine, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne 2003; Spatial Condoms/Premature Evacuations, Bus, Melbourne 2003. Paul’s work is represented in both public and private collections in Queensland, NSW and Victoria.
