SIMONE EWENSON AND SELINA OU: ICY IMMORTALITY

Icy Immortality, a joint exhibition by Simone Ewenson and Selina Ou, scrutinised the construction of corporate and individual identity and asked, to what degree is identity and gender engineered and with what means? Hyper-real and saturated with colour, Selina Ou’s large-scale photographs documented people at twilight in their recreational environments of golf, cycling, soccer and tennis. Sport supports fitness and pleasure but is also trained by economics, rules, boundaries and rivalry. At the end of the day, where does work end and the pleasure/personal begin? Hanging in the gallery space like discarded skins, Ewenson’s works were delicately constructed costumes, or disguises: carefully-made "garments" which contested the propaganda of product marketing and advertising, questioning its relevance to the fragility and uniqueness of lived experience.
