GERTRUDE STUDIOS 2004

In 2004, Gertrude presented an annual showcase of work by the organisation’s 16 studio artists. The sixteen studio artists, of diverse age and professional experience, worked across a variety of media and a range of conceptual territory, in order to create innovative, challenging work which engaged with and extended the borders of contemporary art practice. Presented as an annual exhibition, the Gertrude studios presents a unique opportunity to view the work of Gertrude studio artists as a group, ranging across video, painting, performance, sculpture, new media and beyond. In particular, 2004 had seen the contribution of Gertrude studio artists to a range of significant projects in Australia and internationally, such as the National Gallery of Victoria and ACMI's major survey project 2004: Australian Culture Now; major exhibitions at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, short-term residencies in New York, Milan and France, projects for artist-run spaces, museums, festivals and publications; and many more activities locally, nationally and internationally.

As part of this exhibition program, Gertrude Contemporary held its annual Open Studio Day with the sixteen artists’ studios at Gertrude Contemporary open to the public. The day presented a unique opportunity to meet the studio artists in person, in the context of their working environments and offerred the opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes, view works in progress and discuss and discover more about the work of some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists.
