EUNJUNG HWANG: FABULOUS CREATURES

2003 UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary Laureate

New York-based South Korean artist Eunjung Hwang was an artist in residence at Gertrude Contemporary’s Studio 18, as the recipient of the 2003 UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary.

"I believe I have an extraordinary memory. Everything I've beheld in this world has been compiled in a huge, usable mental catalogue of images. I strive for an encyclopedic achievement: I'd like to be a mirror reflecting the cause of all things, being the personification of the world's memory. The world I encounter in my memory is pictorial and cryptic. I run into multifarious images, odd beings, terrors and ghosts there. To reveal the enigma of the memory pictures, I dare to descend into an everlasting image-producing abyss in my memory and explore the undercurrent with a fluoroscopic vision." - Eunjung Hwang

Fabulous Creatures was an installation of short animations, drawings and light projections which explored unexorcised images from the world of dreams and infancy. The works in Fabulous Creatures followed images to their farthest points and then re-presented them in unique combinations of digital and physical form. Featuring a cast of fantastical characters drawn from memories, visions and childhood imaginings, the exhibition weaved multifarious narratives and media together into a compelling installation in 200 Gertrude Street's Front Gallery.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Eunjung Hwang lives and works in New York. She completed an MFA in Computer Arts at the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2002. Her animations and new media works have been shown at a number of exhibitions and festivals internationally since 2000, including Stuttgarter Filmwinter, Stuttgart, Germany, 2003; Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin 2003; [d]vison-Festival for Digital Culture, Vienna, Austria 2002; File: Electronic Language International Festival, Sao Paulo, Brazil 2002; and the International Festival of New Film, Split, Croatia 2002.
