STUDIO 12 | NATASHA JOHNS-MESSENGER: ANGLED

Studio 12 Exhibition

Questioning the physical and psychological expectations of the space around, Natasha Johns-Messenger’s meticulously constructed installation encompassed architectural elements and mirrored panels to create a maze-like corridor which altered our understanding of the gallery space and surrounds. Notwithstanding the simplicity of Johns-Messenger’s intervention, the viewer’s experience of the work was self-conscious and disorienting, a subtle mixture of illusion and perceptual re-alignment. Reflected in mirrors and glass, and briefly glimpsed in a concealed TV monitor, the viewer — and act of viewing — became amplified as an integral part of the work.
